Black & Decker CM2040 review

A household name, Black & Decker are known to produce home appliances from coffee makers, vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens, heaters and also electric lawnmowers. The Black & Decker CM2040 is a powerful electric lawnmower which delivers a quality cut although it does not have as many features as the Greenworks 25302 electric mower. However, it has a large following making it popular among customers. Might this be caused by the established brand name and not exceptional performance? Let us find out;

Overview

The CM2040 is an electric mower which is manually pushed for propulsion as the motor does not propel the machine. An electric motor produces 40V of power to match gas powered lawnmowers capability. This is however dampened by the low battery capacity which lasts only 45 minutes. A 20 inches wide steel cutting deck houses the single rotary blade. As for cutting capabilities, it is a 3-in-1 with side discharge, rear bag collection and a mulch kit for those who like to mulch the grass clippings. The cutting height can be adjusted between 1.19’ and 3.53’ to accommodate different lawn growth.  Started by an electric start, this 59.5 lb. The machine is easy to start and navigate due to its light weight. A 2- year and 4-year battery and tool warranty respectively is inclusive with the purchase. Here are the pros and cons of this electric mower;

Pros

  • Auto sense feature

One innovative feature that the Black & Decker CM2040 has is the auto sense feature. Basically, it makes the lawnmower able to automatically determine the grass thickness as you are mowing. This prompts it to produce more power on thick grass and less power elsewhere. This means you don’t have to manually adjust the power setting since it does this for you.

  • 3-in-1 discharge options

Most electric lawnmowers do not have all three discharge methods; that is a rear bag, side discharge, and mulching. Some have two, others one, but the CM2040 supports all of them. You can choose a discharge option that best suits your lawn at that moment.

  • Edge Max

Another exciting feature, Edge Max allows you to cut very close to obstacles in your lawn such as fences and buildings. It helps reach that unsightly growth along the fence where other lawnmowers can’t reach.

  • Specially designed grass bag

Apart from being massive, 15 gallons in capacity, you can also check how much grass is in the bag without having to detach it. This saves you those annoying mid-session bag-emptying trips.

Cons

Low battery life is a nuisance and definitely a let-down. Having a 45-minute maximum battery life means it will practically die within 30 to 45 minutes. If this is a problem for you, you can opt for mowers with better batteries such as Greenworks or EGO.  Also, it has a small cutting width of only 20 inches which disqualifies it for mowing large lawns.

Final thoughts

Its added features such as the grass bag, Edge Max and auto sense make it an adaptive genius. However, low battery life and cutting width condemn it to efficiency on small and medium sized lawns only. It can also be stored vertically because the mower doesn’t have fluids (oil, gas) which might leak.
